Membership

In the ELCA, membership is understood as being joined to the body of Christ through baptism, which welcomes individuals into the community of faith and calls them to active participation in worship, service, and fellowship. Baptized members are encouraged to live out their faith in daily life, reflecting God’s grace and love for all people.

When an individual or family wishes to transfer their membership from one ELCA congregation to another congregation, the member's congregation typically issues a letter of transfer to the new congregation to help ensure records are kept updated. This process is usually simple, requiring notification of the member's departure and providing personal details, such as baptism/confirmation dates (if available) to the new church.

A sample transfer letter may be found at this link.
